Kathmandu : Shop Together
You can find handicrafts from Tibet, India, Thailand and of course Nepal, in Kathmandu. Traditionally, shops are open six days a week, from 10 am to 6 pm, and closed on Saturday. However, many tourist-oriented stores are now open on Saturdays too. Bargaining is the general norm here, so do not hesitate.
There are many famous shopping outlets all over Kathmandu, but the widest range is available in the shopping complexes on New Road and its surrounding areas like Khichapokhari, Sundhara, Ranjana Gali, Pako, Basantapur, Indrachowk and Hanuman Dhoka. Khichapokhari is the busiest of Kathmandu's shopping districts, clustered with all kinds of outlets from hawkers on the street to one of the most famous stores in the city. At Pashupati Plaza you can find some of the most famous brands and labels in fashion garments. The other big name for shopping is Bishal Bazar, situated at the heart of New Road. This is one of the oldest and largest shopping mall in Nepal and is very famous among Indian Tourist. Dragon Building is another famous market situated close to Hanumandhoka, where there is a large variety at reasonable prices.
Basantapur Plaza, located at Basantapur, is a good option where the prices start from Rs 99 and go on higher for branded goods. Every evening from 5 pm, a night market begins at a large area in Basantapur, where you can get accessories of all kinds along with the latest outfits at a very affordable price. The other famous shopping areas are Indra Chowk, Ason, Bhotahity and Sundhara.
Baber Mahal is a shopping arcade set in an architectural museum, on the lines of Covent Garden or Delhi's Qutub Colonnade. Baber Mahal is a restored palace belonging to Gautam Rana, descendant of a 19th century Rana king. Restored and extended by architect Erich Theophile, the complex is an eclectic mix of neo¬classical and traditional Nepali architecture. This is where the well-heeled come to stroll, browse, shop, dine and while time. Mannequins draped in haute couture gaze snobbishly out of baroque shop-windows. Galleries with muted lighting and piped music display sculpture, paintings and tribal crafts. Elegant salons (never call them shops!) offer swathes of the softest pashmina and vivid silks, jewellery in turquoise, coral and precious gems. Antique treasure houses spill over with burnished brass, bronze and copperware; carpets, handmade paper and zardozi - all the treasures of the kingdom in one Aladdin's cave tucked away between Kathmandu and Patan.
After Shopping and window-gazing you may go up to the terrace for a cappuccino at an oh-so-French cafe called Chez Caroline. The garden courtyard is sometimes used for literary or cultural soirees while gourmet restaurants serve cuisines from Tex-Mex to European.
